Dolphins thrash Cobras with record total

A lengthy break for lightning reduced the margin of victory to just 15 runs on the DL method but there was no disguising the fact that the Hollywoodbets Dolphins comprehensively thrashed the WSB Cape Cobras after posting a record total of 231-2 in their Ram Slam T20 Challenge match at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday.

Full scorecard: Cape Cobras v Dolphins

Opener Sarel Erwee carried his bat to finish unbeaten on 103 from just 58 balls with 10 fours and five sixes while captain Khaya Zondo finished on 67 not out from a mere 34 deliveries with four fours and four sixes.

He was caught twice during his innings – both one-handed efforts by members of the crowd at deep midwicket who earned themselves an equal share of the R2million of the sponsors prize for such efforts. A third one-hander in the Cobras innings reduced each spectator’s share to R666 666.

Morne van Wyk (19 from seven balls) and Dane Vilas (32 from 21 balls) were virtually forgotten after the third wicket partnership of 136 but they ensured the Dolphins made the flying start which laid the platform for the highest T20 score at the venue.

The Cobras were dreadful in the field. Dane Paterson’s first over was belted for 19 by van Wyk and it rarely got better for the rest of the innings.

It is a near perfect batting surface but wide half volleys can be hit to the boundary on any wicket.

Vernon Philander, Rory Kleinveldt, JP Duminy and Paterson all went for well over 10 runs per over while the best figures belonged to debutant seamer Mthiwekhaya Nabe, who claimed the wicket of Vilas at a cost of 38 runs in his four overs.

The Cobras almost impossible run chase looked to be stillborn at 20-3 but Hashim Amla (52 not out from 27 balls, 3x4, 4x6) and Aviwe Mgijima (37 not out from 19 balls, 3x4, 2x6) appeared to give the beleaguered Capetonians a remote chance.

But when the players returned to the field and the calculations were completed, they were left requiring 38 from just nine balls which was beyond even Amla.
