Football | Afcon 2017

Gyan benched for DRC showdown

Ghana coach Avram Grant has elected to bench his captain, Asamoah Gyan, in the crucial quarterfinal game with DR Congo on Sunday.

The skipper has been unable to convince the team of his fitness despite taking part in training for the whole duration on Saturday. Gyan pulled up during his team's 1-0 defeat to Egypt on Wednesday, and it was expected that he would not be fit until after the Afcon concludes on 5 February.

But, not for the first time, the Al Ahli Dubai forward recovered quicker than anticipated and was seen taking part in the training in Oyem, a day before the game.

The burden of leading the line falls on the shoulders of Jordan Ayew, a player who delights and frustrates in equal measure. Midfielders Thomas Partey and Mubarak Wakaso return to the heart of things, with Afriyie Acquah making his first start of the competition.

Frank Acheampong returns to the left-back position, and John Boye partners Daniel Amartey in central defence.
