Culcay, Andrade meet for WBA regular belt

Jack Culcay of Germany defends his WBA “regular” junior middleweight belt against Demetrius Andrade from the USA at the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle, Ludwigshafen, Rheinland-Pfalz in Germany on Saturday night.

The 23-year-old Andrade has a record of 23-0; 16 since making his pro debut in October 2008 and is coming off a good win over Willie Nelson in June 2016.

He holds the WBO International light-middleweight title and prior to his win over Nelson he beat quality fighters like Vane Martirosyan (33-1-1) and Brian Rose (25-2-1).

Andrade previously held the WBO junior middleweight belt but was stripped of his title for failing to defend after more than a year.

Culcay, 31, comes into the fight with a record of 22-1 with 11 wins inside the distance and the only loss in his career came against Guido Nicolas Pitto on a split decision in April 2013. However, six months later he outpointed Pitto in a return match.

The southpaw Andrade has height and reach advantages and has power in both hands with a 70 percent knockout ratio and wears down his opponents. He has stopped seven of his last nine opponents and will be having his first fight outside the United States.

The much shorter Culcay is a brawler and has to work on the inside and has not always been in against quality fighters.

Andrade and Culcay met as amateurs many years ago in Chicago, Illinois, with Andrade winning with a score of 30-11.

Andrade is ranked at No 2 in the most recent WBA rankings and the other junior middleweight champions are Erislandy Lara (WBA Super), Saul Alvarez (WBO) and Jermall Charlo (WBC/IBF).
